The Earth’s Moon and the Sun are just the right size and at just the right distance so that, occasionally, each of them in turn can disappear from our sky. As the Moon goes through its monthly cycle of phases, it can either block the Sun or move into Earth’s shadow. In either of those two events, an eclipse occurs. Eclipses are some of the most awe inspiring sights in the sky and the come in two varieties, solar and lunar. Solar eclipses are much more dramatic. The sky darkens, of course; one can perhaps sense a cool breeze as the temperature drops. Solar eclipses happen at the time of New Moon. Lunar eclipses occur in the calm of night and take many minutes if not hours to complete. If you are not looking for it, a lunar eclipse can come and go without you even being aware of it. Lunar eclipses can happen only when the Moon is Full.
