The Chromosphere The chromosphere is given that name because of its red color . The chromosphere , is virtually invisible from the surface of the Earth except during a total solar eclipse. Emissions from the element hydrogen give this layer it's red color. Jets of gas called spicules can be seen in this layer. This video shows the motion of spicules and surrounding flares as well.
