A system of two stars which orbit
around each other. Binaries are
rather common in this galaxy,
apparently. In fact, multiple star
systems with as many as six
members are known.
binary star
The first one discovered is a
collapsed remnant of a massive
star which ended its life in a
spectacular supernova detonation.
There are also supermassive black
holes which, as the name implies,
have millions of times the mass of a
single star. They are thought to lurk
in the heart of just about every
large galaxy in this universe.
black hole
An especially bright meteor or
shooting star. Bolides have been
known to explode in mid-flight.
