binary star - A system of two stars which orbit around each other. Binaries are rather common in this galaxy, apparently. In fact, multiple star systems with as many as six members are known. black hole - What astronomers are asked most often to explain. We now actually know of a number of different types of black holes. The first discovered is merely the collapsed remnant of a massive star which ended its life in a spectacular supernova detonation. There are also supermassive black holes which, as the name implies, have millions of times the mass of a single star. They are thought to lurk in the heart of just about every large galaxy in this universe. bolide - An especially bright meteor or shooting star. Bolides are often observed to explode in mid-flight.
