When one looks at the Hubble Classification Scheme, or its updated version, it becomes apparent that there are only a few different ways to make a galaxy. Here is a summary of some of the properties of galaxy types. We speak of two different stellar population types. There is a remarkable trend in the universe. When one examines larger and larger structures in the universe, they tend to become simpler and simpler. The Hubble scheme uses letter and number combinations to describe the types, each with unique characteristics: S are regular spirals, these are the ones most often seen in pretty picture books SB are barred spirals, which show a distinct straight line across the nucleus E are ellipticals which come in essentially two sizes, dwarf and giant Irr irregulars are just what they sound like, no definable shape We find each of these types of galaxies in our neighborhood, which is called the Local Group.
